Electronic Cigarette Association Urges Unbiased Evaluation of E-cigarettes

Matt Salmon, President of the Electronic Cigarette Association (ECA), released a statement to the press yesterday urging that everyone involved in the current evaluation of electronic cigarettes “carefully and honestly stud how these devices work” and that they “recognize the more than one million adult committed smokers” who use electronic cigarettes as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.
We’ve seen a flurry of debate over e-cigarettes in the past few months; there was a front page story in USA Today and several other papers have covered the topic as well. In California, the governor just vetoed a bill that would have denied California citizens the right to even purchase e-cigarettes!
Why the debate? Well, the FDA released a (biased) study about electronic cigaretes, claiming that they were unsafe and found several carcinogens in the samples they tested. According to Salmon, “Unfortunately, many of the arguments we’ve seen recently against electronic cigarettes have been driven by fear of the unkown, insufficient evidence, political agendas, and ignorance about our members’ products.”
What the FDA should do is evaluate all the products and establish a standard, just like they do with other products. Marketing e-cigarettes as completely 100% safe is certainly not true; anytime you inhale something you’re taking a risk. However, they certainly are healthier than traditional, smoke-based cigarettes. Smokeless cigarettes are healthier in that you inhale only water vapor, nicotine, and the flavor of your choosing. So what does the future hold for e-cigarettes?
